Second Chance Animal Sanctuary Animal Rescue in Blue Ridge, Georgia

"Helping animals in distress and giving them a second chance in a loving home"

What makes Second Chance unique?

About Us

Second Chance Animal Sanctuary (SCAS) is located in the foothills of the Tennessee/Georgia mountains and is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization made entirely of volunteers who are dedicated in doing something to help the excess of abandoned, neglected and abused animals in their community. Since there isn't a Humane Society or SPCA in the area, without such a grass roots organization, many of these animals would be left to perish from abandonment, starvation or from being killed by automobiles. In fact, even though Second Chance has done so much to help these animals, the problem is pervasive and the organization is constantly challenged in meeting the demand of strays in the area. Unlike many non-profits, 100% of all donations and funding goes directly to help animals in need. SCAS is an organization with absolutely no overhead or administration costs because SCAS' representatives, foster families, Outreach and Board of Directors are all volunteers and concerned citizens who are interested in animal welfare in their community.

Helping Animals in Distress

Second Chance not only helps homeless/abandoned animals but also helps animals in distress.  It is often difficult for animal lovers to believe, but there are people who do not see animals as living, breathing beings, who are deserving of care, respect and proper treatment.  SCAS volunteers have rescued numerous animals who are victims of mistreatment and abuse. Since SCAS' inception, volunteers have come across dogs that have suffered from gunshot wounds, (see story of Moses) tied to trees and neglected (as happened in one case where a dog's choke collar had become embedded in his neck and had to be surgically removed), as well as frequent occurrences whereby litters of puppies and kittens are abandoned in boxes in the middle of a road or highway.

The above scenarios, however tragic, are unfortunately common instances that take place within the SCAS service area. SCAS knows how difficult it is to change the mentality and behaviors of those individuals who engage in the mistreatment of animals, that is why SCAS has established a proactive approach to this problem. Through education and early intervention, SCAS school education program targets young children in the classroom setting and teaches them how to properly care, treat and interact with animals. This presentation is also available to businesses, civic groups, scouts and other organizations.

We, at Second Chance Animal Sanctuary,  believe that by reaching people while they are young, through modeling and education, we will be able to prevent potentially abusive behaviors in the future as well as to promote  lifelong healthy interactions between humans and animals.
